At this point I really should start to write a little bit about the Sydney lifestyle and the reason, why I love this city so much, even though it might be a little bit trashy at some point.
The way this city is build and the area its settled in is a very unique combination in this world. Even though San francisco, which lies in a bay as well, has similar attitudes towards living and lifestyle, such as vibes or music. Sydney is still a city, which you are not going to love on the first sight. At first its lowd, crowdy, busy. Then as a tourist or Backpacker you will never gonna see Sydney as a citizen, you can smell the lifestyle, but you wont taste it that much. Its well known as a party-city, no doubt about that, most of it comes from all those backpackers. But as soon as you settled in a bit, you wont go to those places as much, such as beach road hotel or kings cross. Which is nice to go out and have fun, no doubt. But as soon as you end up in surry hills, you will notice the lifestyle thats in here. The little cafes, which are always busy, even during a weekday. All those pubs and bars, that are packed after work, full of people. Because if there is something australians love to do, then its their afterworks drinks. Getting a drink or two right after work, between 6 and 7 or even starting at 4.
People are very relaxed compared to other major cities and still nice. Even though sydney isnt as nice as other cities in australia. For example people in melbourne are way more helpful and polite than people in Sydney. Its not as loud and confusing and dirty as it is in sydney. But still. No where in the world, you can get to the beach in 20 minutes with the bus from the middle of the city. Having those beautiful coastlines and national parks around the city. The perfect weather in a mild winter and hot summer. beaches perfect for surfing. No where in the world you have a city with those conditions and those people. People in Sydney love their sports, they are very very sporty. On a morning in Bondi beach, you will see people running, meditating or doing something else to stay healthy and fit. Same view in the park. The surfing culture here is big, so where else will you find people taking the bus with their surfboard.
Beside that, the music scene in Sydney is very unique and on a high quality level. Local bands are mostly very good and well known even over seas. So djs like the bag raiders or ajax are gonna smash the dancefloor with their tunes. Best of it all, the audience is willing to party and show it to them. Now summer is coming, events just spread out like mushrooms. Festivals, Shows, parties. You have something for everyone in this city. Its not comparable to new york, of course not. Therefore its not as busy and way safer than new york with its 10 million people ever can be. But its still quite a big city.
Of course nothing is perfect, the living standards and the conditions of most of the buildings are pretty bad. a working internet connection is farely hard to find unless you live here since years and are settled enought to get your own phone line (which is not the case for furnished proverty or just seasoned living). Then internet is expensive and the television programm is just HORRIBLE! But then, you wont watch much tv in sydney. People are coming and going, its hard to find really good friends.
Beside that, people like me, have everything they need. You have music (indie, reggae and electro, are more than the others), fashion and lifestyle, endless little cafes for an european feeling, authentic cuisine from all over the world (indian, chinese, thai and japanese are very very good) - cheap food, very expensive food or affordable good food - independent movie theatres, a farely big art scene of every art, concerts, all social minorities are able to find here peaceful living together (from gay, to conservative arabian), interesting people to meet, tons of good clubs, pubs and bars and of course SUN, good weather, beaches and nature, farely close by. Tons of running paths and trails you can do to stay fit, and of course fitness everywhere. It also offers some of the highest percentage of young beautiful single woman in this world and I totally approve that one, its amazing.
If you can affort to live in Sydney, you will love it. But the point of being able to affort living here is pretty huge.
Since I fell in love with this city a couple weeks ago, I dont want to leave it, but the day is coming closer and I wonder how much I gonna like Germany now, since I lived here, it will always stay in my heart. One of the best things I ever have done, is going to live in Sydney. Even if its been just for a few months I lost most of my attitudes I had and have been happier than I ever have been able to be in Germany so far. Because first time in my life I dont stand out and dont feel outstanding. Because everyone here is different, everyone has a long story and they are open minded enough to accept that. Even though I love germany as well, because I grew up there felt like a german always. Here I feel more like home and way more welcome than I ever did in germany. But of course I love my friends, I do miss them a lot and I will look forward of going back. Its part of my home and I am used to it, but a part of myself will always stay here and I hope that I can take those attitudes with me back there and keep it.
